Umanqoba experience

The Sundowners Race
by Clotilde
Last Thursday a race in Cape Town at The Waterfront took place. Thus, Tanya and I decided to do it.
That was our first race together and for me, my first race here in Cape Town! We ran 10km, starting from the Waterfront to Sea Point and coming back to finish at the same place. It was so exciting!
I felt very well during the race, and most importantly I beat my record by 2 minutes! It’s only my third 10km race but I did it in about 48-49 minutes despite the wind and the difficulties going through the crowd, and I arrived as the 54th women! But I’m still waiting for the exact result on internet. Tanya was as good as me; she did it in about 52 minutes and she came 94th out of all the women. She improved her time as well since her last race! We can be proud of ourselves and we need to keep training as we did now because in January we have another longer race of 15km!

The Moonlight Mass
by Clotilde
Two weeks ago was the full moon. And do you know what happens every full moon?
In Cape Town there is a meeting where cyclists get together for a ride across the city which starts at the Stadium and finishes on Long Market Square and this occurs every full moon! Whether you are an amateur or a professional; everyone is welcome to take part in this trip! So let’s take your bicycle and get driven by the mass!
The full moonlight is beautiful and thus illuminates the town with its glow. That’s why I would say that it is super to do it and to see Cape Town in another light! I was really surprised to see how many people were taking part and enjoying the power of the power of the moon!

Sunrise on Lion's Head
by Ali
It was my idea to climb lions head and watch the sunrise because I had friend who was leaving , I spoke with him about that one week before but he said NO-WAY. Then one day before he left he told me OK we can do it. I was really happy. We were 6 people so I called a taxi at 3 o’clock in the morning then we started hiking at 4 o’clock and it was really beautiful because we listened to music as we climbed up. At the top of Lions Head we saw the sunrise which was amazing because we saw the city waking up. We saw Table Mountain go from being dark to being light. And the clouds were below us when we arrived and we couldn’t see the city but we watched the clouds rise above us and then we couldn’t see the sun and then the clouds disappeared and we could see the sun, the city and the mountain. My friend had champagne and we celebrated his time in Cape Town. I will miss him. It was an unforgettable morning.

Yoga Lesson
By Katrin
Cape Town is never boring. I do something every day, I have a program five days a week. And honestly, sometimes you need time for yourself. So I decided to go with a few friends from school to a yoga lesson. And it was more than I hoped for, I really enjoyed it. After this hour I was so relaxed. But it was harder than I thought before. Sometimes I had to concentrate very hard to keep up the figure we did. If you want to feel your body and train all your muscles, you should try it!

The Colour Run
By Camille
Color run or the way to be multicolored J. On October 18th 2014 a lot of EF student went to the stadium, the start of this wonderful activity. The goal of this activity was to run 5 kilometers and to throw some color on the others. Honestly I went there more for the colors than running! I was really surprised because the majority of the students ran. The view when we were running was so beautiful, we ran near to the beach. It was the first time that I ran since September but I was with Tom during this little course and I was really proud of us because we ran without stopping every 5 minutes, even though Tom was dying... After running, a little festival was organized, nothing awesome but it was cool to enjoy music with some EF students full of colors. And obviously, after the effort our prize - we ate Mcdonald’s. After this kind of activity a vice is necessary, even two!

Surfing in Muizenberg
by Aurore
To go to Muizenberg you can go by train, its 1 hours by train from Cape Town. So it’s easy to go to Muisenberg. The place is not too bad, the little colorful houses light up the beach, it’s so pretty.
In my opinion, Muizenberg is a nice place but for surfing it is really different to Big Bay. There are lots of waves normally so it’s good but when I saw a wave; there was another which changes the direction. So it was little bit hard to find a good wave. Also the water’s color is not transparent and there are lots of sharks. It’s a little bit dangerous; we must pay attention to that!
So for me, I prefer surfing in Big Bay because the quality of waves is better. I was a little bit disappointed about Muizenberg for surfing but it’s nice place.

Sand boarding in Cape town
by Ali
I went with my school and my friends to the sand dunes here in Cape town . The Weather was good but hot . This wasn’t the first time I did sand boarding Because I had done it in my country, Libya,Twice . And I will go on Saturday again . I really enjoy sand boarding because I think it is easier than surfing.

Elephant’s Eye
by Aurore
It was an excursion where we hiked a mountain near Muizenberg and 20 minutes of Cape Town central. The walk was 40 minutes and afterwards we climbed a cave to have an amazing scenic view of Muizenberg. It was really incredible hiking, between the mountain, lake and sea.
The name of this mountain is Elephant’s Eyes because when you look at the mountain it looks like an elephant‘s head and the cave is its eye. It’s so crazy!
For me, it was a really nice experience because the view is very nice; I discovered a new part of Table Mountain. After hiking the mountain, we arrived in the cave, it really nice but it was very cold so you need to have a jacket. :)

Shark Cage Diving
by Lorena
This is approx. 3 hours from Cape Town very close to Hermanus, when you arrive they give you equipment and breakfast and you board the boat. The boat stops in the middle of the sea and they attract the sharks with food, the sharks can appear in any moment. When the first shark appeared it was incredible, in that point you are ready to jump out the boat and dive, every time the shark approaches you go down and you can see the shark 1 meter or less from you. The water is extremely cold but you forget that because you are concentrating on seeing the sharks, after 1 hour (more or less) you return to the little town and eat more before you leave. You can buy the video and pictures in the company. The people are very friendly and it is definitely worth doing it.

Skydiving
by Ali
I went skydiving last weekend Sunday with Andres and Kathleen. We were very tense! We waited for two hours then we were on our way. It was very easy really. But maybe just as you are about to jump from the plane it’s not easy. When I saw my photo and video LOOL my face was very funny!!!!!

Canyoning
By Clotilde
On Sunday I went canyoning with a group of other EF students. The weather, the place and the atmosphere were so incredible!
The waterfalls are just so impressive and dangerous at the same time. It’s not easy and you will be afraid but you won’t regret this activity! I even jumped and swam in a deep pool at the bottom of a waterfall! It was amazing but cold!
When we finished I can admit how I was tired but happy!

Surfing in Big Bay
By Aurore
Big Bay is a really nice place for surfing. The waves are perfect for the surfing. We have an amazing view of Table Mountain and Cape Town. It was my first time going surfing, I was really excited.
We were 8 people in the group and there were two surfing teachers. The sea was very cold but we had a wetsuit for support against the cold water. The sensation was really nice. During the surfing session we saw a seal who was jumping beteween the waves. It’s was funny.

Lions Head
by Clotilde
Have you ever hiked Lion’s head?
Lion’s head is a mountain in Cape Town with a peak at 669 meters above sea level.
If you haven’t, you have to do it! After about one hour of climbing you will arrive at the top for a beautiful view of Cape Town….so don’t forget your camera! Just wear your trainers, bring water and let’s go! But be careful on the descent…indeed I had a bad experience because I was running, consequently I fell down…my legs can demonstrate it. That’s why you shouldn’t copy me!

Running in Cape Town
By Clotilde
If you like running, Cape Town is a good city for you! An important place for that is Sea point, where a lot of runners are training. Moreover you can benefit from the inspirational sea view while you are running! It’s wonderful!
And why not the sunset after class?
On the other side if you prefer being in nature in a quiet environment choose Deer park, a beautiful forest below Table Mountain! If you go there from school, be ready for a hard climb until the forest! But it’s good for your legs and your heart!
Tanya and I run together, it’s very nice! So if you too you like moving and are interested, join us!
Sometimes we run 8km but most of the time we are able to run 10km. We start from Sea point running 5km until Clifton and then we return to the starting point!
For me it’s a good challenge because I am used to running in France, so that I would like to go back to my country and be better than I was before! It’s so cool to run in another atmosphere with an amazing coach like Tanya!

Hiking up Table Mountain
By Balthazar
In my first week in Cape Town I hiked up Table Mountain twice, the first time was with my friends and the second time was with the school. It was very exciting. You need one or two hours to go up.
The elevation of Table Mountain is 1085 meters. When you are up it’s possible to see a lot of places if the weather is good.
When I was going for the first time, the weather was perfect because it did not have a cloud in it.
We left after the classes, we started to climb Table Mountain at 3.00 PM, as we advanced more it was more beautiful, the view became more and more impressive.
